Options For Cleaning The Air In Your Home

Posted on

If you have pets in your home, you may worry about the quality of your air due to their dander and shed hair. If someone in your family has allergies or if you have a new baby in the house, then clean air is important. While vacuuming regularly and keeping dust cleaned up helps, you'll get the best results by filtering the air with a purifier. Here are some of the options for cleaning the air in your home.

Adding An Air Purifier To Your HVAC

Since the air in your home circulates through your HVAC system, it's a good place to install a purification device. This can be done by upgrading the filters in the system or by adding UV lights. A UV lamp kills bacteria and mold spores, but it doesn't do much for filtering the air. However, it controls biological growth in the HVAC system and cleans the air as it circulates to keep you from breathing in mold and bacteria. For the best results, you should combine UV purification with a filtration system.

If you have a newer HVAC, it might have a high-efficiency filter or be suitable for one. Pleated filters have more surface area and they're better at removing small particles from the air. However, if your HVAC is old, one of these filters may restrict airflow too much and lead to problems with your HVAC. Be sure to consult your owner's manual before changing filters or adding a new filtration device to your heating and cooling system.

Using A Portable Air Purifier

An easier way to clean the air in your home is with a portable air purifier. These have a fan that pulls room air through a filter and blows out cleaned air to circulate throughout your house. These come in various sizes and degrees of filtration, and you can move them from room to room so you can place one in your bedroom at night and in the living room during the day.

These often have two filters. The first filter is for trapping large particles so they don't clog the inner HEPA filter that is able to pull smaller particles from the air. Some may even have charcoal filters for removing odors from your home. While air purifiers are effective at cleaning the air, they won't help remove allergens that are heavy and fall onto the floor and furniture. You'll still need to vacuum and dust regularly to keep the air in your home as clean as possible.
